Joseph Henry Hummer, 73, Decatur, died 6:53 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at
St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born Jan. 29, 1933, in Kokomo,
the son of Herbert H. and Fannie Mae (Rediger) Hummer. On May 6, 1958, in
Chicago, he married Carole Ann Hadley who preceded him in death on Dec. 14,
1993.
He was a graduate of Kokomo High School and he was a veteran of the U.S.
Marine Corps serving from 1951 until 1954.
He was a galvenizer at Continental Steel until the mill closed. He had
worked for the City of Kokomo. He was a member of Family Worship Center, a
life member of V.F.W. Post 2067 in Peru, and Willshire Sportsman’s Club,
Inc. He enjoyed boating and fishing; and was a gifted poet, whose poetry
brought him to realize his true passion in Christian song writing. He
actively wrote music for Lighthouse Ministry.
Survivors include three daughters, Laura Baker and husband Mike, Las Vegas,
Deborah "Debbie" Lowry, and Dawn Moore and husband Donald, all of Kokomo;
two sons, Greg Hummer and wife Paula, and Derek Hummer and wife Kelli, all
of Kokomo; 12 grandchildren, Jasson, Kelsey, Jerry, Steven, Kenny, Brandon,
Chris, Shelby, Jacob, Kaylee, Trevor and Hadley; four great-grandchildren;
brother and sisters, Herb Hummer and wife Jan, Florida, Rita Bagby and
husband John, Kokomo, and Georgia Warner and husband Ralph, California;
beloved family members, Garrett Floyd and wife Vivian, Kokomo, and Marge
Hammer, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by
his parents, wife and cousin, Danny Hammer.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home,
Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with Pastor James Bradley
officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Tipton. Friends may
call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial contributions
may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Kokomo Rescue Mission.
